Right to Information Commission sensitizes the people of Oti Region

Right to Information Commission sensitizes the people of Oti Region. The Commission which is mandated by the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), per Section 41, to Promote, Monitor, Protect, and Enforce the right to information that is granted to a person under Article 21(1)(f) of the 1992 Constitution and the provisions of Act 989, came to Oti regional capital Dambai to educate the public on how to use the right to information act to access information from public institutions and offices.

The Commission has demarcated Ghana into Zones so as to engage the public to know their rights and obligations under Act 989. This basically forms part of the Commission’s promotional strategy to let the public understand the law so that they can exercise their rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana.

The Commission, on 12th July, 2022, began its Zone 2 Regional sensitization progamme beginning from Eastern Region, moved to Volta Region and has ended its Zone 2 sensitization with the public through media outlets as well as a Public Forum at the Dambai College of Education-Dambai in the Oti Region where individuals, heads of institutions, the media, among others, were allowed to ask questions pertaining to Act 989.

The Commission, by ending its sensitization at Dambai, makes it the ninth (9th) Region the Commission has sensitized namely; Greater Accra, Western North, Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Eastern, Volta and Oti Regions.

The Commission, aside educating the public on Regional basis, shall equally be educating the public in their Communities, Churches, Mosques, among others, so that individuals and Institutions do not fall foul of the law since there are consequences that await anyone who flouts the law.

According to Lawyer Yaw Sarpong the Executive Secretary of the Right to the Information Commission, every public office must have an information Unit to help the public access information at ease.

The Oti Regional Minister Honourable Dr Joshua Makubu challenge the citizenry that without information nothing good can go on so all should abreast themselves with the right information so that Oti Region and the country at large can develop.

He again cautioned that whatever information one request should be used well in order not to put oneself into trouble.
